Indian stock markets opened on a positive note on Wednesday, January 1, with the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 showing slight gains, despite subdued activity due to the New Year's Day holiday.

Indian blue-chip equity indices, Sensex and Nifty50, traded slightly lower on Wednesday, the first session of 2025, dragged down by losses in banking stocks. Analysts anticipate that the markets will likely remain near current levels as they await the start of the quarterly earnings season next week.

The stock market kicked off the new year on a positive note, with both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty starting the first trading day of 2025 in the green.

The BSE Sensex fell 687.34 points to hit a low of 77,560.79. Nifty tested the sub-23,500 level and was later trading at 23,460.45, down 116.55 points or 0.49 per cent.

The year 2024 was a mixed bag for the markets. The Sensex recorded a gain of 8.12 per cent year-to-date, while the Nifty 50 appreciated by 8.75 per cent. Both indices touched their all-time highs in September 2024, with the Sensex reaching 85,978.35 points and the Nifty hitting 26,277.35.

As the day came to an end, the BSE Sensex slumped with marginal losses of 109.12 points, or 0.14 per cent, ending the day at 78,139.01. Similarly, the NSE Nifty dropped in value by 0.100 points or 0.00042 per cent, to close at 23,644.80.

This comes after the stock market experienced a crash during the later trading hours of the previous day's session.
