The Ann Arbor Fire Department is warning residents to be cautious after a fire that occurred at a home Wednesday afternoon is believed to have been caused by a lithium-ion battery.

A small fire at an industrial building in Chula Vista has raised concerns about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, following a major battery storage fire in Escondido last week that forced the evacuation of hundreds of nearby businesses.

Beyond Poland, AE Elemental, which is equally owned by Ascend Elements and Elemental Strategic Metals, plans to build Europe’s largest lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Germany. That facility will have the capacity to recycle up to 25,000 metric tons of batteries per year, or approximately 58,000 EVs annually.

Erickson recommends disposing lithium ion batteries at the city’s household hazardous waste facility or an electronics retailer that accepts the batteries.

"The people that buy those batteries are aware of that they are cheaper batteries, but they still take the risk.”
