A handful of cats in the United States have been found dead due to avian influenza, a viral disease that historically only affected domestic poultry and wild birds, though some variants have been capable of infecting mammals including humans.

Bird flu has been found in both Northwest Naturals and Monarch Raw Pet Food. One cat has died while several have been sickened after eating the food.

A Portland brand of cat food is being recalled in 12 states, including Washington, after a cat that ate it contracted bird flu and died.
