The edtech giant is notifying state attorneys general about the breach but won’t say how many individuals have been affected

Education software platform PowerSchool has started sending breach notifications to victims of a December 2024 cyberattack, but has yet to share how many people were affected or what exactly happened,

More than 75 school boards across Canada said they were impacted by the PowerSchool data breach, a number that could change as investigations are ongoing.

If you're a student or teacher — or were one in the past few decades — you may soon be getting a head's up that your personal information was accessed as part of the widespread PowerSchool cyber breach that recently hit Canadian school boards.

According to a notice that will be sent to those affected, hackers were able to get access to students' and teachers' contact information, birthdays, Social Security numbers and more.

Education software giant PowerSchool has started notifying individuals in the U.S. and Canada whose personal data was exposed in a late December 2024 cyberattack.

A third-party software provider that maintains student and teacher data for school districts across the country disclosed it suffered a data breach earlier this month.

Bleeping Computer on Wednesday also reported that an extortion note the attacker sent to PowerSchool claimed that the personal data of 62.4 million students and 9.5 million teachers was swept up in the breach. PowerSchool said it’s offering two years of free credit monitoring to all those affected.

The Rochester City School District says there was a massive data breach impacting students, families, and staff.RCSD says hackers gained access to the records of approximately 134,000 students and staff.

In a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General this week, PowerSchool reported approximately 33,488 Maine residents were affected by the breach. The number of Mainers affected will likely go up. This is only a preliminary filing with the state and PowerSchool is still investigating the breach.
