India is seeking changes in a six-decade-old Indus water treaty and has formally notified Pakistan to amend the pact. The longstanding dispute concerning the Kishanganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects has prompted India to seek a modification in the treaty.

India on August 30 served a formal notice to Pakistan seeking a review of the agreement citing “fundamental and unforeseen” changes in the circumstances and impact of the persistent cross-border terrorism,

India has officially sought a review of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), a water-sharing agreement established in 1960 with Pakistan and facilitated by the World Bank.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered in 1960, allocates water from six rivers between the two nations. Under the treaty India controls the water from the Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej (eastern rivers), while Pakistan has rights over the Chenab, Indus, and Jhelum (western rivers).

India has formally sought a review of the 64-year-old Indus Water Treaty (IWT) - a water-sharing agreement brokered by the World Bank in 1960 - with Pakistan. New Delhi has sent a notice to Islamabad on Aug. 30 under Article XII (3) of the Indus Water Treaty, Press Trust of India reported late Wednesday night.

Under the Indus Water Treaty, India was granted unrestricted access to the water from the ‘Eastern Rivers’, and Pakistan retained rights to that from the ‘Western Rivers'.

Foreign Office says Pakistan is committed to the full implementation of Indus Water Treaty. Responding to the queries of media persons at her weekly news briefing regarding India's notice seeking reassessment of the treaty,
