Most people – 92% of the world’s population – live in places where the air quality doesn’t meet World Health Organization guidelines, the organization says.

The map uses the same air-quality index as the US Environmental Protection Agency. Anything below a 100 AQI (yellow) is considered safe, according to the EPA.

That index takes into consideration World Health Organization guidelines, and its categories go from “Fresh Air” to “Airpocalypse” (which was the reading Friday evening in Portland, Ore.).

All of the reports are based on the Air Quality Index, also developed by the EPA. An AQI of 50 or lower represents "Good" quality air that is relatively free of pollutants.
