A historic snowstorm covered the Mississippi Coast in a thick blanket of soft, powdery snow on Tuesday, turning the beaches, palm trees and bayous into a winter wonderland the likes of which haven’t been seen in the area for decades.

Wildfires scorched California, blizzards tore through Texas and now rare heaps of snow have fallen on the Gulf Coast. How much snow, you ask? More than has fallen all winter in Anchorage, Alaska (3.8 inches).

While Anchorage may not be getting much snow this winter, plenty of it is falling in several southern states. Four inches of snow had fallen in New Orleans, Louisiana, as of Tuesday afternoon and more was still falling,
