Superman star David Corenswet has been praised by director James Gunn for not taking his yelled instructions “personally” on the set of the comic book reboot. Known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, Gunn is believed to have auctioned 400 actors for the film’s titular role.

Hoult took the dig in stride, commenting a series of twin emojis on Corenswet’s post. He also shared the photos on his Instagram Story — to the tune of Rosemary Clooney’s “Sisters” — and added several laughing emojis and a skull.

The film, directed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, kicks off the new DC Universe with the superhero. Superman sees David Corenswet ( Twisters, Pearl) as the title character and as Clark Kent, a reporter for The Daily Planet. The role has previously been played by Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin, among others.

It's also worth noting that the events of "Superman" happen after the animated "Creature Commandos" TV series, which aired on HBO Max in 2024. In that show, Frank Grillo voiced Rick Flag Sr., the leader of Task Force M, and he reprises the role in live action in "Superman."
