Trudeau, who is facing pressure from members of his own Liberal party to quit ahead of federal elections in Canada later this year, has been a target of frequent attacks from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

In mid-December, Chrystina Freeland, the deputy prime minister and head of finance, unexpectedly resigned citing disagreements over the handling of Trump’s suggested 25 percent tariffs on the country – an issue that could damage the economy of both countries.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, facing dwindling popularity in his country, is expected to resign this week, according to the Globe and Mail. He took office in 2015.
