As a result, some stores have stopped stocking it. But SealCoat is still available at specialty woodworking stores and through online retailers.

Jun 3, 2020 · I was doing some research on Shellac and a few FW articles note that Zinsser sealcoat is a 2lb cut dewaxed. The clear and amber are 3lb cut with wax. An article from Jeff Jewitt in 2014 said a shortage of Clearcoat was due to a poor crop of shellac driving up the price causing some distributors to stop stockin it in favour of the clear and amber.

Jul 16, 2007 · Mike, the Zinsser SealCoat is a 2# cut blond dewaxed shellac pure and simple. They chose to call it a sanding sealer to take advantage of its use for that purpose. It is perfectly usable as a standalone shellac finish. Any shellac can be used as a sanding sealer as well as a standalone finish.

Mar 30, 2009 · The shellac will have only a very minor additional darkening effect since Seal Coat is basically a blonde shellac. Ditto what Steve said; Danish oil is meant to be an "in the wood" finish, and won't do much on top of the shellac. Instead, you can use a wiping varnish if you want the added protection over a pure shellac finish.

I would worry about partial cans after several months.Zinsser Sealcoat Sand Sealer IS the stuff I recommended. It is a 2 lb cut of clear, dewaxed shellac.

May 31, 2006 · To (quickly) dewax shellac, here are 2 mthods: 1. Pour the shellac through a "paint strainer" (available at any paint store or the paint counter at Home Depot or Lowes). A paint strainer is a paper and nylon mesh filtering cone with the nylon mesh occupying the apex. You'll need several cones for a quart of shellac.
